If you're buying the standard version of this device, you won't be getting much in the way of performance. It will come with an Intel Braswell Celeron Processor, 2GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
The 300 has a nice selection of ports for such a bargain basement laptop (2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 2.0, HDMI-out, VGA, and a 4-in-1 Card Reader). This should give you some flexibility in terms of how much data you'll be able to cram into the device.
If the aforementioned specs don't suit your needs, the IdeaPad 300 can be upgraded to an Intel Core i7 Skylake processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of data. It is immediately unclear how much that upgrade will cost you, but expect it to be a lot more than
There's nothing you can do about this laptop's putrid battery life. You'll only be able to get about four hours of video playback, which isn't even good enough to get you through half a work day. If you're going to buy this laptop, don't expect to be moving around very much.

Early verdict

If you don't have a ton of money to spend, but you need a solid device with a pretty but not gorgeous build, the Lenovo IdeaPad 300 is a suitable laptop. It can be upgraded to perform at a really high level, but we're not sure how much those upgrades will cost you. Proceed with cautious optimism – this could be a fantastic deal if Lenovo affordably prices the customizations.

Design

The Ideapad 300S reminds me of a scene in the original Iron Man film where Tony Stark, while designing his suit, tells his computer to "throw a little hot-rod red in there." The plastic notebook is a beautiful shade of red that looks like it came right off of a race car. Several Laptop Mag staffers expressed their love for the shade of red, although the notebook is also available in black and silver.

The plastic notebook is a beautiful shade of red that looks like it came right off of a race car. Several Laptop Mag staffers expressed their love for the shade of red, although the notebook is also available in black and silver.
When you open the lid, everything is black, from the keyboard to the palm rest to the bezel around the screen. The Ideapad 300S is fairly light for a 14-inch laptop, weighing 3.6 pounds. The Acer Aspire R 14 is 4 pounds, and the Toshiba Satellite Radius 14 is 4.5 pounds. The 300S has a fairly average footprint for its screen size, at 13.38 x 9.45 x 0.77 inches. The Aspire R 14 is 13.5 x 9.6 x 0.7 inches at its thinnest point, and the Satellite Radius 14 is 13.3 x 9.3 x 0.83 inches.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The Ideapad 100S' keys have 1.6 millimeters of travel and require 60 grams of force to press, which makes them feel nice and clicky. There was a bit of flex in the middle of the keyboard that made it feel squishy from time to time. Nonetheless, I was able to type 104 words per minute (just above my usual average) with a roughly 4 percent error rate (my usual error rate is 1 to 2 percent) on 10fastfingers.com.
The 4.2 x 2.9-inch touchpad on the 300S is spacious and, more importantly, accurate. Gestures like pinch to zoom, pulling forward with three fingers to show the desktop, and swiping out with three fingers to show my open windows all worked almost flawlessly. The touchpad doesn't have any dedicated buttons, but it has just the right amount of click and is really comfortable to work with.
